State-run Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has signed a pact with global miner BHP to work on reducing carbon emissions at the Indian steel producer's plants that operate blast furnaces, SAIL said in a statement on Monday.

The collaboration will explore strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by considering the use of alternate reductants such as hydrogen and biochar in blast furnaces. An initial study will assess potential decarbonisation approaches to support SAIL’s transition toward sustainable steel production.

Under this MoU, the parties are already exploring a number of workstreams supporting the potential decarbonisation at SAIL's integrated steel plants which operate blast furnaces (BF) with an initial study to assess various strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG),
