Dear Abby: Niece names baby after my horrible, abusive stepfather
Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Contact Dear Abby at www.DearAbby.com or P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069.
Dear Abby: I thought my dead stepfather was out of my life forever. But new baby’s name brings everything back
I have one sister and three younger half-sisters, all of whom I love. Recently, two of my nieces, the daughters of one of my half-sisters, gave birth within months of each other. Both decided to name their babies after their grandparents.
Dear Abby: I can’t bear calling my niece by her name - it honors my abuser
I truly cannot bear to call the baby by his given name. I kept this to myself, but my sister noticed that I avoid using the baby’s name and has confided in me the very same feelings. If she noticed, perhaps my half-sisters have noticed as well.
Dear Abby: I hate what a family member named a new baby, so I’ll be using a nickname
I don’t believe my nieces are aware of this. My stepfather died before my nieces were born, so they never knew him. I truly cannot bear to call the baby by his given name. I kept this to myself, but my sister noticed that I avoid using the baby’s name and has confided in me the very same feelings.
