The vacancy created by California Rep. Doug LaMalfa's death will now be filled in a new special election. Gov. Gavin Newsom has 14 days to proclaim the special election and set a date.
In a move that rankled some Native Americans in Siskiyou County in 2018, LaMalfa introduced a bill to reestablish federal recognition of the Ruffey Rancheria, a tribe that was terminated by Congress in 1958, and allow the new group to claim reservation lands anywhere in the county. That bill was not approved.
California voters approved Prop 50 in the November 2025 election, temporarily redrawing district lines throughout the state in ways intended to favor Democratic candidates. As a result, starting in 2027, conservative-leaning Shasta, Siskiyou and Modoc counties leave District 1 and join the North Coast's more-liberal District 2.
