A divided Supreme Court on Friday put off ruling on the Trump administration’s request to allow the president to remove the leader of an independent government watchdog agency until at least after a lower-court hearing next week.

The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, weighs in on a case involving the new Trump administration for the first time.

The justices said the head of the Office of Special Counsel could remain in his job at least until Wednesday, when a lower-court order temporarily protecting him expires.
