The new San Diego Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent is speaking out following a deadly suspected human smuggling event that occurred over the weekend.

Late Friday night, U.S. Border Patrol agents were notified of a panga boat crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. An hour later, agents spotted the capsized vessel with several people emerging from the waters off Imperial Beach.

Four people died and five others were injured early Saturday morning when a boat capsized off Imperial Beach in an attempt to smuggle migrants into the United States, authorities said.

Multiple agencies responded to the mass casualty incident near the Imperial Beach Pier as a powerful storm moved into the county overnight.
