North Korea is behind the massive crypto hack, according to several blockchain monitoring firms and a well-known researcher

Researchers spot the $1.4 billion stolen from Bybit moving through cryptocurrency wallets that were used in earlier heists attributed to North Korea's Lazarus hacking group.

Lazarus Group, hackers based in North Korea, tricked Bybit CEO Ben Zhou into approving a transfer of 400,000 ethereum tokens from his company's cold wallet.

Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit said last week hackers had stolen digital tokens worth around $1.5 billion, in what researchers called the biggest crypto heist of all time. Bybit CEO Ben Zhou said the crypto was taken from a "cold wallet" - a digital wallet usually stored offline and so supposedly more secure - that was used for ether tokens.

Ben Zhou, Bybit's CEO, said that the hack had affected around 401,000 Ethereum and sparked a surge in withdrawal requests.

Less than 72 hours later, Zhou said Bybit had restored the exchange’s balance and kept customer withdrawals open, although he did not account for the stolen crypto. The scale of the Bybit theft surpasses the previous record of a $615 million heist of Ethereum and U.

As part of the investigation and recovery efforts, Bybit is pledging 10% of recovered funds to reward ethical cyber and network security experts who play an active role in retrieving the stolen cryptocurrencies in the incident.
