What Sovereignty’s Preakness opt-out says about the Triple Crown
After the announcement Tuesday that the connections of Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty have opted to skip the Preakness Stakes on May 17, spoiling any slim chance of a Triple Crown sweep this year, hard questions are being asked about U.S. racing’s centerpiece series.
Sovereignty to Skip 2025 Preakness After Winning Kentucky Derby, Ends Triple Crown Bid
According to WBAL-TV's Greg Ng, 1/ST Executive Vice President Mike Rogers said Tuesday that he was informed by trainer Bill Mott that Sovereignty will not run in the upcoming Preakness Stakes. Last weekend, Sovereignty beat out Journalism to win the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
Sovereignty not making the trip to Baltimore follows decades of debate about spacing out the Derby, Preakness and Belmont.
