Torrential rain triggered flash floods that tore through Pakistan’s northwestern Swat Valley over the weekend, killing at least 32 people and laying bare gaps in disaster preparedness in a region once ravaged by Taliban.

Pakistani authorities on Sunday recovered 4 more bodies from the Swat River, raising the death toll to 12 after a flash flood swept away more than a dozen people in the country’s northwestern district of the same name. A search operation is still underway for one missing person, according to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi.
