U.S. Navy is renaming a ship named for gay rights leader Harvey Milk and considering new names for others named for prominent Americans.

Milk, who served in the Navy during the Korean War, became one of the country’s first openly gay elected officials, winning a position on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977.

Navy tradition and basic decency make clear the beleaguered defense secretary shouldn’t rename the ship. Hegseth is doing it anyway.
