With several key players missing, he tried to rejigger the lines in hopes of finding a little magic, but nothing worked as the Bruins fell to the Hurricanes, 3-1.
Johnny Beecher was claimed off waivers by the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. The 24-year-old forward was a first-round pick of the Bruins in 2019 and spent just over two seasons in Boston. Beecher had one goal through six games this year, and 11 points (three goals, eight assists) through 78 games in the 2024-25 campaign.
McAvoy left the game midway through the second period after being struck by Montreal Canadiens defenseman Noah Dobson's shot. He didn't return to the game at Montreal's Bell Centre. The defenseman was bleeding and needed help getting off the ice.
Riley Tufte spoiled the shutout with 10 seconds left and Jeremy Swayman made 29 saves for the Bruins, who had a six-game home-winning streak halted and lost for just the second time in 10 games overall. Swayman's personal five-game winning streak was stopped.
The Franklin native appeared in three games for the Bruins this season, and will likely see time in the lineup after Charlie McAvoy's injury.
