The price of U.S. copper futures hit a record high after Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House that a 50 percent tariff on the metal was imminent.

Copper prices are typically an economic benchmark because the metal is widely used in construction and industrial manufacturing.

“The market is assuming that a lot of this tariff policy will go away, and I don’t think it will,” said a former top Trump official.
