With Alonso swinging a hot bat and the Mets pitching staff performing well, New York has emerged as one of the early favorites in the National League. If Alonso maintains anything close to this level of performance, the Mets will be a tough team to keep out of October baseball.

J.T. Ginn, a former Mets prospect traded to the A’s for Chris Bassitt before the 2022 season, frustrated his old organization by allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander topped out at 97 mph with his fastball.

Pete Alonso homered and drove in three runs, Brandon Nimmo also hit a home run and Griffin Canning was solid into the sixth inning as the New York Mets held off the Athletics 7-6.
