'Don’t go into the water': Warnings issued on East Coast as Hurricane Erin moves in Atlantic
The storm has already prompted evacuation orders on North Carolina's Outer Banks and warnings about dangerous rip currents and swells along the East Coast.
Dewey Beach closed ocean access around 12:30 p.m. Aug. 18 "due to rip currents and dangerous waves," the town's website says. In Rehoboth Beach, officials prohibited swimming around the same time. You can still walk on both beaches.
As of Monday morning, Hurricane Erin is a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. The storm has weakened slightly after hitting Category 5 strength over the weekend. Erin is the first hurricane to form during the Atlantic hurricane season,
