Botafogo sacked coach Renato Paiva on Monday, 48 hours after they were eliminated in the Club World Cup by Brazilian rival Palmeiras. The Portuguese held the job for only four months but won Botafogo's first Copa Libertadores title.

Palmeiras rewarded their raucous fans with an extra-time goal, defeating Botafogo and advancing to the Club World Cup quarterfinals.

It was the ultimate supersub appearance. A tense, tetchy game between Palmeiras and Botafogo looked certain to be heading for a penalty shootout at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia as the game went deep into extra time.
