France has underlined the urgency of a diplomatic solution in response to Iran's advancing nuclear programme as a second round of talks get underway in Geneva, ahead of next week's inauguration of Donald Trump as US president.

Iran and European powers Britain, France, and Germany have agreed to continue discussions on Tehran’s contested nuclear program following a round of talks held in Geneva on Monday, Iran’s state news agency reported.

Iran and European powers said they held "frank and constructive" talks on Monday about Tehran's nuclear programme, just a week before US President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

Little progress on nuclear diplomacy is expected as France has warned Iran's uranium enrichment is "nearing the point of no return."

Sources have indicated that the E-3 is still concerned that Israel or Trump may only push Iran over the nuclear weapons line.
