The famed – or at least infamous – Darvaza Gas Crater is a giant flaming hole in the ground, created during Soviet times when a natural gas drilling rig collapsed into an expanding sinkhole.
The data revealed today come from a rock in Jezero Crater, where the rover landed in 2021 to hunt for signs of Martian life. Aeons ago, the crater held a lake that could have been conducive to life.
Blue Ghost has been conducting extensive scientific operations, including deploying its surface access arm and enabling various payloads such as the Electrodynamic Dust Shield and Lunar PlanetVac.
