After struggling to finish the regular season, the Yankees stuck with rookie catcher Austin Wells in the cleanup spot of the starting lineup and he had an impactful performance against the Royals on Saturday night.

Hours later, in a 6-5 loss to the Yankees, the Royals reverted. Starter Michael Wacha walked the first batter he faced. He walked the last batter he faced, too. Angel Zerpa, who relieved Wacha, walked in a run. So did John Schreiber, who relieved Zerpa.

The series opener included five lead changes — the most in postseason history — but the Yankees secured the final momentum swing from a surprising place.
