California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a warning to President Donald Trump and Texas Republicans amid growing attempts at redrawing Texas's congressional districts to further favor Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterms. A spokesperson for Newsom told Newsweek his office is "closely tracking what Texas does" and "exploring potential options."

"Maybe we'll do it here in California," he said of Trump's mandate that Texas Republicans redistrict to win five more GOP seats.

During a press gaggle on Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) spoke about his plans for congressional redistricting in his state and Trump's push to get the Texas legislature to redistrict congressional seats.

After Texas' governor announced redistricting plans, Gavin Newsom suggested California could respond, but the state's laws would make any counter moves difficult.

The update comes after President Donald Trump earlier this week urged Republican state lawmakers in Texas to help the party pick up five seats in that state.

During the interview, Ryan asked Newsom to respond to a question sent in to him by his friend and fellow podcaster. “Motherf—–r,” Newsom exclaimed before saying he was a fan of Rogan, who has been critical of the Democrat.
