Federal wildlife officials announced Thursday they are seeking information related to what they called the illegal killing of a gray wolf reintroduced to Colorado as part of the state’s voter-mandated restoration program.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said a gunshot wound "ultimately led to the cause of death" of one of Colorado's released wolves that died in 2024.

Colorado Park and Wildlife captured the animal last summer after it repeatedly preyed on livestock at a ranch near Kremmling.

A necropsy found that a reintroduced wolf, which had died shortly after it was captured as part of the Copper Creek Pack relocation effort, had a gunshot wound, which led to its death.

Federal officials are seeking information related to the killing of a gray wolf. In a release issued Thursday, the US Fish & Wildlife Service said that the wolf was a male that had been originally captured by Colorado Parks and Wildlife in late August.
