Sovereignty, who was trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Junior Alvarado, won the 2025 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Trainer Bill Mott has won the Kentucky Derby without his horse crossing the finish line first. In 2019, the Mott-trained Country House was elevated to first after Maximum Security was disqualified for interference.

Mott, who first won the Derby with long shot Country House under unusual circumstances via disqualification in 2019, had the best horse in the field on Saturday.
