SACRAMENTO, California — Gavin Newsom warned the country is on the precipice of tipping into authoritarianism, predicting that President Donald Trump does not want to leave office after his term ends and accusing federal immigration officials of acting as “the largest private police force in history.”

President Donald Trump attempted to insult California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday, only to end up getting roasted himself, as his attempted put-down just opened the doors for Newsom and others to mock him on something he’s really, really sensitive about.

California Governor Gavin Newsom's support among Democratic voters surged in another poll of the 2028 presidential primary. Newsweek reached out to Newsom's office for comment via email. Some Democrats believe Newsom is meeting calls to fight back harder against Republicans following frustration among the party's voter base over what many viewed as a feeble response to the Trump administration.
