A strong earthquake off the coast of Russia has triggered a tsunami advisory for San Diego County coastal areas and the entire West Coast.

Tsunami warnings issued after one of the century's most powerful earthquakes struck in the Pacific faded as only small waves reached Southern California.

SAN DIEGO — A Tsunami Watch has been issued for the coastal areas of San Diego's La Jolla and Oceanside. This alert was issued following a preliminary 8.7 magnitude earthquake that hit near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
