Jan 13, 2011 · Picture this: A.J. Foyt, more disgusted and perturbed than usual, hammering on his car in the pits during the middle of the 1982 Indianapolis 500 as the crowd roars with delight. For most race fans over the age of 40, it's an iconic moment in Indy history.

Raced by Bettenhausen in the 1981 Indy 500 and was then Bettenhausen's backup car at the 1982 Indy 500. This was the car fitted with a twin-turbo Chevrolet V6 and entered as a "Spirit 83" for the 1983 Indy 500 where Bettenhausen made two qualifying attempts but came in both times.

Four-time Indy winner A. J. Foyt started on the front row, celebrating his record 25th career Indy 500 start. Though he was caught up in the Cogan incident, his car was hastily repaired and he went on to lead 32 laps.

In the 1982 Indianapolis 500, Foyt started on the front row but on the pace laps he was victimized by a controversial wreck when second-year driver Kevin Cogan suddenly spun out for no apparent reason. Seven cars were involved in the incident including Foyt and Mario Andretti, who was unable to continue.

May 3, 2017 · To mark the 40th anniversary of AJ Foyt’s fourth Indianapolis 500 victory in 1977, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum has assembled a once-in-a-lifetime show. The exhibit, officially titled “AJ Foyt: A Legendary Exhibition, Presented by ABC Supply,” features nearly three dozen race cars from Foyt’s amazing six-decade driving career.

The Van Scoy Diamond Mines 500 was won by A. J. Foyt getting Foyt his 67th and final USAC Gold Crown win. The race was cut from 500 miles down to 305 miles due to rain. At the Tony Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds was won by George Snider for his first and only win in USAC Gold Crown competition.
