Looking for at least a partial return on their vast investment, Ford added a road going version to the GT40 line-up in 1965. Apart from a slightly detuned engine and wire wheels, there was little that distinguished the competition and street versions of the GT40.

The very first road-going GT40 built, chassis 1013 was retained by Ford Advanced Vehicles as a press demonstrator. As a result, this car featured prominently in period magazines. The subsequent owners did take the car to the track and at one point the original Borranis were replaced by stronger cast-aluminium examples.
