The historic ranch offers a taste of canyon life in the 1930s with the original ranch house, bunk houses and other out-buildings. As in the past, the cool green lawn and nearby stream offer summer time visitors a welcome rest.

The Snake River National Recreation Trail #102, on the Idaho side of the Snake River in Hells Canyon, takes you to the Kirkwood Ranch, a lush complex of historic interest and respite for both river rafters/boaters and hikers alike.

May 2, 2021 · Kirkwood Ranch was a sheep operation formerly owned by Len Jordan, 23rd governor of Idaho, who later become a US senator. We didn’t see the inside of the house, but presumably it contains the first bathtub in Hells Canyon, installed by the governor-to-be.

The Kirkwood Ranch is an island of interest and beauty along the Snake River for both river rafters/boaters and hikers alike. There's a campground with flush toilets as well as a picnic area. Interpretive signs are located throughout the Kirkwood Historic Ranch for structures, equipment and general history.

A good day hike, however, would be to go from Pittsburg Landing to a place called Kirkwood Ranch where an old ranch has been turned into a museum (10.2 miles roundtrip). Although the trail parallels the river, it does a lot of ups and downs going as much as 465 feet above the surface of the river.
