Established in 1881, Northern Michigan Asylum (Traverse City State Hospital) became the third psychiatric hospital in Michigan. Kalamazoo state Hospital (1859) and Pontiac State Hospital (1873) were becoming overcrowded and a third facility was needed.

Northern Michigan Asylum was established in 1881 as a psychiatric hospital in Traverse City, MI. It was closed in 1989 and fell into disrepair. I had the opportunity to tour a couple of the old buildings that still have not been rehabilitated into new offices, shops or restaurants.
