Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, formerly known as Pilgrim State Hospital, is a state-run psychiatric hospital located in Brentwood, New York. Nine months after its official opening in 1931, the hospital's patient population was 2,018, as compared with more than 5,000 at the Georgia State Sanitarium in Milledgeville, Georgia. [ 1 ]

Pilgrim PC provides a continuum of inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services. The campus includes several residential agencies including: Central Nassau Guidance Center and Transitional Services

In the 1940s, a thirteen story building was constructed by the United States Army adjacent to the grounds of the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center. The building, which also stood parallel to Commack Road, was opened as the Edgewood State Hospital.

Even today, Alfred Eisenstaedt’s photographs from the grounds of Pilgrim State Hospital on Long Island are remarkable for the way they blend clear-eyed reporting with compassion. But what is perhaps most unsettling about the images is how terribly familiar they look.

Built from 1931-1940 to alleviate overcrowding in nearby asylums, Pilgrim State Hospital consisted of dozens of buildings on almost two thousand acres of campus, capable of housing 12,500 patients, larger than many towns.

Oct 23, 2022 · Pilgrim is today the last of the state asylums still operating on Long Island. However, it is no longer what it used to be. The farming section of the hospital was sold off, renovated, and became the Western Campus of the Suffolk County Community College in 1974.
