The SS Leviathan began its life in 1914 as the German luxury liner Vaterland, but was seized by the U.S. during World War I, renamed Leviathan, and converted into a troopship. After the war, it was reconditioned and became the flagship for the United States Lines, but its luxurious services were expensive and struggled to attract passengers during the Great Depression.
